It's going to be a lovely long weekend ahead. Yay!

Whatever your plans are, there is always room to slot in something healthy + beautiful.

1. Drink your 8 glasses of water. Most of you may spend your weekend running about, shopping, visiting or even travelling and it's easy to forget to drink up. Our bodies need water to stay hydrated (think moist dewy gorgeous skin) and to perform basic bodily functions like getting rid of toxins. So carry a bottle of water with you and sip generously throughout the day.

2. Watch what you eat. Research have shown that people averagely consume 15% more calories on holidays and weekends. The more worrying fact is that these calories are typically from unhealthy and processed food, doing nothing for your body. Now you may have the answer why Monday feels so sluggish - that's because your body is working hard to rid itself of the unhealthy calorie overload during the weekend! What should you do? Be conscious of what you eat and if you must snack, go for fruits! You will benefit from the fiber and vitamins that comes along with it. The fact that it's yummy and refreshing is a perk ;)

3. Get moving! If you are the sort who loves to cuddle up with a book or catch up with your movies marathon-style, do make it a point to balance out your activities during the day. Curl up for half the day then spend an hour or two (in the cool evenings perhaps?) to get some exercise albeit a light one. Some great exercises that doesn't seem like exercise includes - walking your dog, enjoying an outdoor sunset (while walking of course) or simply just strolling around the garden. The fresh air will do you heaps of good.

4. Prioritise quality sleep. Weekends can be a jumble of activities and perhaps even parties. It's easy to think that "well, it's ok if I cut off a few hours of sleep, I'll try to make up for it soon". Unfortunately our bodies don't work that way! We need constant and daily quality bedtime. Try to keep late nights to a minimum and if needed, apply the Cinderella rule - call it a day at midnight. Your skin (and health) will thank you for it.

5. Take some time for yourself. Kids, family, pets, chores, friends, shopping sales... you name it, plenty are calling for your attention. While most try to pack everything they can into one weekend, it's equally as important to pack some "me time" into the equation. Go for a pampering spa (we recommend Organique Therapies for some organic pampering) or maybe just take some time off at home with a indulgent face mask (we love the Living Nature Hydrating Gel Mask). Or simply indulge in a rejuvenating hot soak in the tub or go get your hair done. Whatever tickles your fancy but do take some time off alone.

6. How about something good that feels good? Look out for community causes around your neighbourhood that you can contribute to. Maybe it's a recycling campaign, maybe it's a charitable home that needs volunteers for some simple home repairs, maybe it's your dear old neighboor who needs some help moving some plant pots. Whatever it is, if you are blessed with the resources and ability to contribute, it's a great thing if you do.

Whatever it is, enjoy your break ahead and hope you make it a healthy + beautiful one.

Since the start of this year, we've had a few strong reminders about the powerful forces of nature. The images of destruction left behind by earthquakes were as tragic as they are scary. For me personally, it's a reminder that we cannot for one moment take the earth for granted. Our planet is alive. Our planet is powerful. Our planet is everything we depend on. Our planet is also limited.

So this year, in conjunction with Earth Day, we wanted to do something that will make a difference. Even if it's just a small difference. And we can with your participation.

We want to encourage YOU to Reuse, Reduce and Recycle. There are 3 parts to this:

1. Reuse : PRELOVED CHILDREN'S BOOKS & CLOTHES.

If you have children, chances are you would have some clothes and books your child is no longer making use of.

Why not donate them and someone else in need will reuse them?

Bring any children/baby's clothes & books that are in usable condition to us. We will help you sort it out and pass it to people who need them and will reuse them.

2. Reduce : SHOPPING BAGS.

When you are shopping, we would like you to think twice before taking a bag. While we don't use plastic bags at our outlets (we use paper bags if you need one), but every paper bag still require energy & resources to manufacture.

Why not bring your own reusable shopping bag?

For your convenience, we do provide paper bags when you shop with us but we'd much prefer not to. So say "no thanks to a paper bag" the next time you shop with us (and anywhere else really!)

3. Recycle : PLASTICS.

On average, we use at least 5-6 personal care products every day, if not more. Think about it - shampoo, face wash, face moisturiser, body wash, lotions, etc. What do you usually do when you are done with the products and its packaging? Throwing them in the bin means they end up in a landfill. Unfortunately, most plastics cannot biodegrade without specific recycling processes. Even with the best of intention, many plastics are actually not recycleable (unfortunately).

Why not try and recycle what you can?

Not sure what you can or cannot recycle? Bring them to us and we will help you sort it out plus send them to a recycling facility. ps: do us a favor and kindly rinse the bottles first

Most people overlook the importance of exfoliation (or scrub as many would call it). It is actually the key to achieving a clear, bright and smooth complexion.

Why? Because the top most layer of our skin is actually a layer of dead skin cells. If our skin is not as effective as it should be, this layer starts to build up. The result is dull and uneven looking skin. Also, a thick dead skin cell layer may result in clogged pores which may cause whiteheads, blackheads and pimples *gasp*

Hence the importance of regular exfoliation to help skin get rid of dead skin cells. It should be part of your skin care regime. It is definitely in mine!

But there are many different types of exfoliation products/scrubs. I like the MUKTI Gentle Facial Exfoliant for a few great reasons:

Jojoba Beads does the job to gently polish off dead skin cells. The key word here being "gently"! This is one scrub that will NOT scratch your face ever. The Jojoba Beads are perfectly spherical with no sharp edges. So you'd never risk damaging your skin, especially those with slightly thin & sensitive skin (like mine).
Contains Ginkgo Biloba to improve circulation. This helps in promoting healthy skin growth. Healthy skin is beautiful skin, really!
You can cleanse and exfoliate at the same time. For those who use just a foaming cleansing on a daily basis can skip the cleanser and go straight for the MUKTI Gentle Facial Exfoliant on days they'd like a scrub. For me, I always double cleanse starting with a milk cleanser then follow with a mild foaming one. So for 2-3 times a week, I will use the MUKTI Gentle Facial Exfoliant instead of my usual mild foaming cleanser. It works a dream.
It's certified organic. Need I mention this? *smiles* Certified organic means it's certified to be made with organic ingredients and that it doesn't contain any suspicious ingredients. I firmly believe (and have proven!) that when we cease to bombard our skin with chemicals, it doesn't have to work so hard in dealing with all the synthetic stuff. And thus result in healthier, stronger and definitely better looking skin.

So how often should we be using a scrub? I'd say at least 2-3 times a week.

I have a habit of keeping little odds and ends that includes spare buttons, odd beads, bits of string, remnant stationary, etc. I’m never really sure what I’ll do with it but just can’t bear to throw it away so wantonly. So I’m going to make something out of it. All it takes is a little bit of creativity and it’s a great way to spend a leisurely Saturday afternoon.

So what am I making? An earring holder that is wall mounted!

Why am I doing this? Because I have bits and bobs of things that I’ve hoarded over time, because my earrings are overcrowding my dresser table and because I love nothing better than to repurpose things to give them a new lease of life.

What you’ll need:

Random buttons > I have a respectable collection of buttons hoarded over a span of 20 years *laughs*. I remember sitting next to my mom as she changes the buttons of her clothes to update them and I’ll be scavenging the old buttons because it seemed a pity to throw them away. So as you can see, some of the buttons look like they are from the 70s. Well, they are!
Thick thread > I’m using leftover ones that’s a nice beech brown. These are typically used for cross stitch purposes. It’s a bit of a mystery why’d I have this in my drawer, I don’t do cross stitch! But they are coming in handy now. If you don’t have this type of thread, don’t fret. You could use ordinary sewing thread. Just that you would have to “bundle” them to make it thicker.
A piece of cardboard > Any size or shape you fancy! What I have is a piece of plastic wafer cardboard roughly the size of an A3 paper. It’s leftover from some event that we did (I think). If you are using any other type of cardboard, the only criteria is that the cardboard must be lightweight (because you will be “mounting” it on the wall) and it will not be difficult to poke a needle through (because you will be doing that repeatedly!)
Needle > Find one with a needle hole (is that what they call it?) big enough to put a thick thread through.
A little bit of White Tack, Scissors and a Pencil.

What to do?

Choose your buttons. Have fun! Be creative! Choose a few different colors and slightly different sizes. Pair them up.
Arrange your buttons (in pairs) on the cardboard and decide how you want to lay them out. Basically you will be tying a thread between a pair of buttons and that’s where your earrings will hang from. I’ve chosen Red, Black and Neutral colored buttons and laid them out in pairs but at varying heights. That’s because I have dangly earrings of various lengths.
Mark the locations of the buttons with a pencil once you are happy with your layout.
Now sew away! No fancy stitches. Just sew like how you’d sew a button. I’m using thick thread so just 2 stiches per button. If you are using ordinary sewing thread, you might want bundle it to save you a few stitches. Link to eHow on the basics of sewing buttons.
Once all the buttons are sewed one, the hardest bit of effort is done. Yay! Now you can put the needle aside and do this bit by hand. Loop the thread around a button tightly and then pull across to the other button. Loop back to the first button and keep going until you have about 4-5 lines across. At the end, go round the button a few times quite tightly and cut the thread. *Important* You have to make sure the line is snug and fairly tight. Otherwise it will sag once you hang your earrings on them.
Do this for all the button pairs and you’re done!
Now you can mount it on the wall with some White Tack. If you don’t know what White Tack is, it’s pure magic. It’s this white rubbery thingy that can be used for mounting on surfaces without leaving a mark. And it’s reusable. It’s my can’t-live-without bit of stationary. Try it.
Now the fun bit. Hang up your earrings! Then stand back and glow with pride that you just made this masterpiece *smiles* You can even hang your necklaces on it.

It's yet another hot day!

Over here in KL, we have not seen any rain for a few days. It's unbearably hot, it's Monday and I am dreaming of cool breezes on a chilly day.

Well, I cannot change the weather outside but I can on the inside! We are lucky to have a quiet and private workplace at a residential area. So it's small, cosy and relaxing. And there are little things we can do to feel cool on a hot day *smiles*

So what do we do to feel cool on a hot day?

1. The cooling scent of Peppermint wafting in the air..... We put on the burner with a few drops of pure Peppermint essential oil. The fresh minty scent is a real pickup! Just like eating mints cools the breath, the minty scent in the air makes the air feel somewhat "cooling". Do try it!

2. The soothing sound of water gently flowing..... We have a mini fountain thingy in the office with feature ducks constantly spewing water. Some visitors commented that it's as if the ducks are drooling (LOL). Anyhow, it helps to disperse moisture into the air (cooling!) and the sound of water is so relaxing! And when one is relaxed your pulse slows, blood pressure lowers and body temperature drops slightly.

3. The relaxing lull of Joanna Wang's jazzy voice...... I absolutely adore her. Her songs puts me in the Zen mode and forget I'm at work, forget it's Monday and forget the heat! For me Joanna Wang or the soothing sounds of Bossa Nova music never fails to relax me. Or sometimes I put on nature sounds of birds chirping or rain falling in the rainforest. Whatever works for you!

So are we feeling the heat? Well, a little still but it's definitely cooler, calmer and more relaxed here than in most places. But we work hard, really!

(This post has nothing to do with beauty nor natural skin care! Thought I better start with a bit of a disclaimer *smiles*)

I must confess, I'm a book worm. I love to read. And cook. And sew. And garden. And whip up random beauty recipes from every day kitchen ingredients. Ok I'm digressing. Well, enough rambling and I'll delve a little deeper about the DIY beauty recipes another day.

I don't know about you but I spend way too much time staring at a computer screen. My eyes ends up being really tired by the end of the day and if you haven't noticed, tired eyes seems to make a person look listless.

My cure? A mini eye-spa at home with one of my favs - the Mukti Rosehip Eye Gel. This winner is absolutely brimming with organic rosehip which is a powerful antioxidant to:

It's been a while since we had an update. That's because we've been busy! Fresh off the Ikano Earth Day (which was a blast), we had a couple an events with The Star and a DIY Beauty Workshop with SDB. More about that in the next post.

I've been following Connie's blog for quite some time now and I have to tell you this.... this girl is a makeup whiz. She is really creative in her use of colors and has a real mastery of contouring using colors. I also love it that Connie takes very good care of her skin and shares candidly about what she loves, what she doesn't, what works, what doesn't.

This month's FEMALE Magazine had a 6-page feature on eco-friendly beauty. I think it's great that all the magazines as well as mainstream media are more active in promoting awareness of natural, organic and eco-friendly beauty (& skincare). They really should be applauded for doing so. While it may not seem obvious but it's not an easy thing for the publications as most major advertisers (at least where skincare is concerned) may not be deemed as under the "natural & organic" category.

Anyway.... I was given the opportunity to share some thoughts and was quoted in some sections of the feature. If you can't read from the image, scroll all the way down for an excerpt.

Something random..... I found this recipe for Home Made Lip Balms from Daily Eco Tips and thought it was a pretty good one. Nice and simple.

Lip balms are probably the most commonly used skincare item. It is a necessity for anyone to protect your lips from environmental factors and to keep lips hydrated. The concern with most commercial lip balms on the market is that they are made from petroleum products which do little to nourish skin and may even be harmful to the body. Natural lip balms are a breeze to make at home and you get to choose if it has a scent or flavor to it.

Homemade Natural Lip Balm
(recipe source: Daily Eco Tip)
*******************************************************************

Ingredients:
    * 1 tablespoon beeswax pearls (also called pellets or pastilles)
    * 1 tablespoon pure Shea butter
    * 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
    * 10-15 drops essential oils

Directions:

Melt beeswax, Shea butter, and almond oil together in the top of a double boiler or in a heat-safe bowl set over a pot of simmering water; stir continuously with a whisk.
Once the ingredients are liquefied, remove them from heat. Whisk in essential oils. Working quickly, transfer the liquid to a measuring cup or a container with a pour spout and then divide it among four 1/2-ounce lip balm tins.
Let balms cool completely until solid, about 20 minutes. Store in a cool, dry place.

Variation: Peppermint-Eucalyptus Lip Balm
Use 6 drops of peppermint essential oil and 4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.

Variation: Vanilla-Rose Lip Balm
Use 10 drops of rose oil, also called rose otto, and 5 drops of vanilla oil, also known as vanilla absolute.

I must admit that I have not given this particular recipe a road test. If you do try it let me know what you think. As this recipe is not vegan.... I'll be on the look out for a vegan variety (without beeswax).

Sulfates/Anionic Surfactants

Sulfates is the colloquial name for a group of cleansing ingredients called alkyl sulfates, which are amongst the most irritating ingredients in personal care products, yet used by almost every manufacturer worldwide.

Ammonium lauryl sulfate is the most strongly irritant, followed by sodium lauryl sulfate. Ammonium lauryl sulfate is commonly used to replace sodium lauryl sulfate, which is the subject of negative publicity and is suspected of causing potential damage to liver, lungs & immune system.

Anionic surfactants can pose serious health threats. They are used in car washes, as garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers - and in 90% of personal-care products that foam. They appear in many forms:

Spray mists, nice things as they are, don't travel too well. Even the best made ones tend to leak thanks to the difference in air pressure pushing the liquid involuntarily out of the nozzle (unless if they are in a glass/aluminium bottle). However, there are a couple of things that you could do if you want to minimize the chance of it doing so:

Carry it with you on board ie. hand carry luggage. Take it out and spray a few times throughout the journey to relieve the pressure.
If you are packing it, unscrew the mist spray top. While it is detached from the bottle, spray contents back into the bottle ie. empty the spray top. Once the spray top is empty, screw it back. This makes it harder for the liquid to travel up and through the nozzle.
Another option is to transfer into a small travel bottle that is glass and screw top. These are less likely to leak during travel. But it would mean that you may have to change to pour-on-hands-and-pat-on-face or using cotton pads for application, rather than spraying on.
Always pack bottles upright and try not to stack one on top of another. If packed inside a luggage that is not a hard case, try to put them in the middle so that they are cushioned by clothes as luggages are usually stacked one on top of the other thus putting a lot of weight on the inner contents.

Our skin tends to get drier while travelling thanks to the changes in weather as well as dry cabin air on board the aircraft. I seldom travel without this one:

Goodbye 2009! It's now slightly more than a year since we started our first Bodybar outlet. Looking ahead, we are really excited as we've got lots in store. Looking back, it's quite amazing to realise how far we've come in a short one year. We now have 3 outlets, triple the staff and double the number of brands. We were also featured in virtually every major media throughout the year.

So many things happen in a year and time just whizzes by. Generally it's been a tough economy for most (especially retail!) and probably will be for a while.
